The Cretan Organization of Melbourne and Melbourne’s Cretan Association, along with the help of the Cretan Federation of Australia and New Zealand and the coordinating council for the memory of the Battle of Crete, organized a series of events to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Crete.
On April 9, a traditional Cretan feast took place in the Cretan Village, in which many artists were present, as well as the dance groups of the Cretan associations.
The Youth Group of the Cretan association also presented a short theatrical play, as well as traditional songs.
On April 10, after the mass in the Cathedral of Agios Efstathios, a parade followed, and a placing of wreaths at the Shrine of Remembrance, where the governor-general of Australia, Peter Cosgrove was present. The Greek armed forces were represented by lieutenant-general and chief of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff, Konstantinos Gatzogiannis, while amongst many officials was Anastasios Vamvoukas,mayor of Chania.
